Diagram of Vegetable and Flower Gardens

vegetable and flower garden diagram

A diagram on left is vegetable garden. Three more strawberry plants were added on April 12. There was one surviving strawberry plant from last year. This time I got plants that already had health looking leaves and flowers. Last year I planted about nine strawberry plants that had mostly root and tiny leaves that were about to open. Only one survived. I thought they were just too bare so I picked ones with establish leaves. It worked all three did very well this year.

This year, one and half row was allocated for each goya and cucumber to allow them to spread more freely. Last year, one row was allocated. Garlic were planted but they did not well during the season but their leaves coming out after the season was over. It's February 2010 and middle of winter but I see green straight leaves from several garlic. Since I thought they died away during season, I am amazed to see them still surviving.

Summer squash were planted from seeds this year and they brought several good looking fruits. Eggplant flowered but did not put any fruit. Two jalapeno pepper were in house during the winter and replanted to outside. They did not do very well, though. Tomato were disaster. It rained a lot and this season and plants seem having trouble growing overall.

A diagram on right is flower garden. This year, my wife wanted to have mostly herb that flowers. We used coriander and chive most. Chive replenished itself quick so we were able to keep harvesting. Coriander does not replenish itself. Once certain amount of leaves were grown, it flowered and died. I re-seeded coriander but overgrown parsley did not let seedling coriander sunlight and growing space so new coriander did not do well.

Thyme gave nice fragrance but we did not have any recipe so it remained untouched. So as oregano. It flowered and grew well but we did not use them for cooking. We used basil often but basil did poorly this year. Maybe the location was not good since it was right next to brick wall and it hampered the growth.

Pansy, these little tough plants survived two New England winters. I moved it's location from right corner of the flower garden to left corner where I double dug They did well in spring flowering many beautiful flower in various colors and patterns. As the season progress the size of flower became smaller. Probably, I should have give proper nutrition to them.

Since I liked marigold, I insisted growing them. They did well and provide many flowers in late season. I added goya in the left upper corner of the garden. They expanded to the side of stair case as I hoped and grew several fruits.
