津波当日の様子（岩手県田野畑村北山崎）

津波当日は海にいて、北山崎断崖下の洞窟内から流木を除去し、渚につけた舟に積み込む作業を、ボランティアで田野畑高校の生徒達とやってました。 地震で断崖が崩れ、砂ぼこりで目が見えなくなりました。

現場ではあまり大きな地震は感じられませんでした。それは、舗装された道、あるいは普通の地面にいなかったためで、 砂利とか砂の上はflexibleで足は固定されないため、大きな揺れを感じなかったようでした。舟に乗って作業していた２名は、全く地震が分からなかったそうでした。

万が一を考えて生徒たちはすぐに崖を登りましたが、砂地で揺れをあまり感じていなかったため、自分を含め大人達は甘く見ていました。実際、地震の後、洞窟を引き返し車を取りに行きました。自分を含め車を置いてきた9名は洞窟をくぐったりしながら海のそばを1キロ歩き戻りました。

車にたどり着く直前、動画で最後にトンネルを抜けるシーンがあるますが、あそこで有線放送のスピーカーを聞きました。大津波警報と言っていた。しかし、波に変化はなく本当かなという感じでした。車に乗るときに、断崖上から車で駆けつけ、急いで逃げろと知らせに来てくれた人が二人いました。私の漁の師匠の息子さんだ。それを聞いてただ事ならぬ状況を理解しました。たぶん、この直後に波が一気に引いて津波が押し寄せたのだとおもいます。

自分たちがバスを止めた場所に高校生のバスが待機していたので、崖から降りた先の机浜番屋群という所にバスを回させた。２名がそのバスを誘導していった。現地で生徒をバスに乗せて坂を登ったところで津波が来た。誘導した２名は生徒を乗せた後、沖をみるとみるみる近づいてきたらしい。車に飛び乗り坂を走らせ逃げた。走っていたら間に合わなかったという話だ。

運が良かったとしか言いようがありません。後でデジカメのデータ記録を見たら２０分も浜辺の遊歩道を歩いていたようです。 他の地域では１０分で津波が来たことを考えるとぞっとします。

その後数分で北山崎展望台に車を走らせ戻ったところ、津波がすでに来ていました。 北山崎の消防団に合流し道路を封鎖してしばらくしてから、観光船のある島越に行って救助せよという指令が入り、オフロードの山道を通り現地に１８時到着。 田野畑村のレスキュー最前線へと自分を含めた４人で進んでいった。

すでに辺りが暗く周辺の状況がつかめない。海から約１キロも離れた所に消防車両を止めなければならない状況に唖然とした。 多くの家屋、ひっくり返った車、散乱する電線に電話線。

テレビで見れていない初日の夜で、かなりの恐怖を抱きながら、地震が頻繁に起こっていて津波が来るかもしれない中で、崖に取り残されている人々の救助に向かった。 足元は泥だらけだし瓦礫の山でなかなか前に進めない。 途中で死体も見ながら暗闇の声がする方の断崖へと突き進む。４人発見し、おじいさんが足を折って動けない状況になっていた。

もっと上のほうからも声がし７人位いて、一人は動けないらしい。その一人を残してみんな動きたくないということで、４人グループを先に救助し待機している村のバスに乗せた。 担架で断崖を降りて戻るのは困難を極めた。１往復するだけで１時間以上もかかっただろうか。次第に重さで腕の感覚もなくなってきたが、耐えるしかなかった。

もう一往復するのがかなりつらかったが進むしかなかった。帰り道は警察を含めレスキュー隊員が来てくれたので、非常に心強く助かった。 この日は現状がまったくつかめない暗闇の初日なので、２往復で打ち切った。この日の夜は色々と考えるところがあり、一睡もできない夜だった。

Description of the day the tsunami hit:

I was on the seashore under the cliff in Kitayamazaki National Parks when the earthquake hit. I was cleaning up trash and driftwood from the cave with teachers and students from Tanohata High School students as an volunteer work.

Land slide from nearby cliff caused the huge amount of dust and we could not open our eyes. We were standing on the sand and gravel surface at seashore. Interestingly, we did not feel the much of the earthquake. Unlike paved or hardened surface, flexible surface like we were on might scattered or absorbed the vibration of the earthquake. Two people on the boat did not feel the earthquake at all.

We thought tsunami might come next so we started evacuation. Students climbed up the cliff with teachers, and other 9 adults including me decided to walk back along the seashore for ten minutes to get back to our cars that were parked at Kitayamahama seashore.

When we got to near the cars, we heard warning of big earthquake from the loud speakers. We jumped in each of our cars and drove away from to the water's edge to higher ground. It was very close call. I was just lucky to be alive.

After I jumped in my car at Kitayamahama seashore, I drove up to Kitayamazaki view point which was on the top of the cliff. People who were there told me that big Tsunami already came few minutes ago.

Then I went to join volunteer fire company of Kitayamazaki, and went to close roads. We were ordered to rescue people at Shimanokoshi area, so four members including me went there at six in the evening. It was already dark, and we could see nothing. Then we had to park our fire truck far away (1 Km) from the sea because there were so many houses, electric and telegraphic wires, upside-down cars, and so on.

We had to walk about 1km to rescue several people who managed to survive on the cliff. It was very hard to walk in darkness crossing lots of wires, mud, cars, and other so many stuffs. It was silent, but aftershocks were still on-going. It was very scary moment. I even saw a dead body while I was walking.

We heard voices from the cliff and found three people. One old man could not move because he broke of his broken legs so we carried him. Two other old ladies could walk. Then we heard more voices from the higher cliffs, and they told us that one old lady could not move. They wanted us to rescue her after we carried the old man to the bus and buck because they did not want to leave without her.

Carrying the old man was so hard because he was heavy and we had to walk with unsteady steps. We almost lost senses of our hands and arms while we were walking about an hour. We managed to get back to the Tanohata village bus, and we went back again to rescue the old ladies. I could not breathe after I did that twice.

It was a very long day for me and I was extremely exhausted, but I could not sleep at all, thinking about many things happened to me on this day.
